The drawingtolearn website was created in 2015 based on my work with teachers and students in schools in Australia and Asia over many years. I have a strong belief that drawing, creating and making supports student AND teacher engagement and learning. I have had a career of wonderful adventures teaching this way - from Kindergartens, primary, secondary to university classrooms. This is the way I have learnt and I am still learning. I have had pencils, scissors, rulers, card, paper and glue close by my hands since I was a 10-year old girl. Creating engaging tasks for children that integrate head, heart and hand is my passion. You might see an overlap with the Head heart and hand app.... See what you think.
I believe we have a responsibility as educators to teach students to think and explore. We need to support them to be the problem-solvers of the future. We need to create classrooms with opportunities for students to regularly draw, create and make. It sounds simplistic in this era of national testing and pressurised classrooms but it works!
This website is designed to provide teachers with some of the materials that have been created with teachers for classrooms from the desert to the mountains and everywhere between. Try the units of work as they are or use them to create your own unique approaches. The unit examples on the website encourage inquiry, show the many and multiple connections to curriculum and use drawing and making at their core.
Come on in, have a look and then have a go! Leith Hogan
