How do you talk with people who are making and creating with you but who don't speak your language about contrasts and connections with colour?
You use the colour wheel image on your iPhone and whatever you can put your hands on to connect the learning to the task at hand.. So coloured stranded cottons it was... and it worked!! mostly

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been planning Inquiry programs with teachers. We spend quite some time trying to come up with ideas of how the students can exhibit/ show the work that they have collected as a result of their exploration. We have explored Powerpoints, prezi's and blogs, but these are a little too complex for younger students.
I often get the students to create a mural or collage that demonstrates the culmination of their learning...... So, a collage of an elephant [Life and living curriculum] will show the habitat, the terrain, the food, key features and body parts etc., as part of the exhibition. These will all be teaching points as the students explore the inquiry and it will al, be evident in their mural. So, a little suitcase with all the work that the students have collected as result of their exploration of migration : maps, timelines, migrant stories etc., OR a suitcase with a scene from the country where the suitcase was purchased.. OR A large pizza box with a collection of tasks that the students have collected as they explored the plus's and minus's of recycling and packaging. Recently, I have been working with two teachers who are exploring technology with 8 year olds. We discussed getting the students to collect the smallest objects that they can find to demonstrate the concept of connections........ into a watch box, perhaps? Each of the objects in there will be connected to their exploration. They will know how these objects are related to technological connections. Another thought was that the students create a communication bag to collect their technological explorations, over the duration of the Inquiry. We came up with the idea of turning a pillowslip into a communication bag and the students printing an image on the bag that represents the essence of communication. They have loved doing this and I have had to brush up on my support skills for pin and needle action with 8 year olds. |
